PSHE
The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to enable our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help children understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. At St. Mary’s, we want our children to become more resilient and understand that it is okay to make mistakes, as we learn from them. We provide our children with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We embrace a collaborative approach with external organisations such as the Behaviour Support Team, Education and Inclusion Team, Sports Partnerships, visits out of school and visitors into school and the other schools in our Multi Academy Trust. We make use of many opportunities to develop children’s knowledge, strengthen their resilience, learn tolerance and celebrate diversity (Safer Internet Day, Children’s Mental Health Week, Anti-Bullying Week, Black History Month, Road Safety Week and charity fundraising events) to ensure that our learners have the best possible life chances.
RSE
At St. Mary’s, RSE ensures children and young people are equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to cope with the many pressures and challenges of modern society. Learning about friendships and family in RSE are the building blocks to help children to understand themselves and others. Children are prepared for the physical and emotional changes they undergo at puberty.
RSE should equip children and young people with the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships. It provides a positive view of human sexuality and dignity of the human person; equips young people with the ability to make practical judgments about the right thing to do in particular circumstances and explores and promotes virtues which are essential to promoting respect and dignity. All of this is done within the doctrine of the Catholic Church, faithful to the Church’s vision of human wholeness whilst recognising the contemporary context in which we live today.

Every child in St Mary’s school belongs to a House Team. Our staff are always looking out for children who are demonstrating positive citizenship and good learning behaviours. Great role models are rewarded with House Team coloured tokens. We celebrate and display the coloured ribbons of the winning team on our House Cup Trophy every term.
At St Mary’s we understand that children’s learning can be improved by the explicit teaching of learning behaviours. Research suggests that when children improve their learning behaviours, this skill set can improve both academic achievement and cognitive ability. Each term we focus on a different ‘Learning Superhero’ to develop essential skills such as resilience, focus, perseverance and empathy.
