Geography
The teaching of geography gives pupils an understanding of the world around them, its environments, places near and far, and the processes that create and affect them. At St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, its interconnectedness and their place in it. The geography curriculum at St Mary’s also enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
We intend to develop children’s curiosity and a fascination of the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Our topics offer a range of opportunities for investigating places around the world as well as physical and human processes. Our lessons are intended to improve children’s geographical vocabulary, map skills and geographical facts and provide opportunities for consolidation, challenge and variety to ensure interest and progress in the subject. We teach children to understand how geography influences our lives and the choices we make today so that they are respectful, tolerant and knowledgeable global citizens.
